What is Access?
Access is the point at which entry is gained to a circuit or facility;
ability of a user to enter a given network. It also refers to the
rlationship between local telephone carriers and other telecommunication
companies(long distance) who want access to the local telephone network.
Telephony 101
Before the divestiture of 1984, AT&T was the major provider of both
long-distance and local telephone services. During that time
AT&T and its collective company known as Bell Systems owned most ot
the local networks and almost the entire long-distance network in the US.
All other Non-Bell companies worked with AT&T as partners to
provide service to every phone in the US, specially to the rural
areas. Over 1,400 independedt companies served 36 million
people. While a few independent companies provided service to more
that one state, many others served only one or two communities. Some
independedt companies operated from rural homes with switchboard in the
owners living rooms.
The breakup of the Bell Systems in 1984 created "Access",
referring to the relationship between local telephone companies and other
telecommunications companies who want access to local telephone
network. The largest customers of local telephone access are
long-distance companies, who use local networks to transport their calls
between their central offices and their customers.
