| Taligent | An Operating System that IBM, Apple, and Hewlett-Packard are trying to design. In 1991, IBM and Apple created a company called Taligent in order to develop a universal operating system (code-named Pink). | |
| Microkernel | Microkernel Operating System is IBM long-range strategy to consolidate all its operating system. IBM is trying to consolidate all it operating system around workplace technology in order to develop a single operating system. This workplace technology includes Microkernel, a kind of software which is more basic than an operating system. This software can be adapted to different IBM machines such as mainframes and microcomputers. IBM have a long way to go, it will be a while before we see this operating system. | |
| Gershwin | Apple is also planning to do the same as IBM's workplace technology. Apple is trying to design a piece of technology that will work on different microcomputer. Since IBM and Apple are not working together it is most likely that this two technology will not be the same. | |
| Magic Cap | General Magic, once a part of Apple's Unit that spun of as a separate software company in 1990, is trying to create an easy to use icon base operating system. This operating system is supposed to have images that are base on real objects. They are currently working to make this available to the public. | |
