OS/2 (Operating System/2) is an multitask and multimedia operating system that function
well for Network computers. It was first designed as a join effort between IBM and
Microsoft, but letter Microsoft declined and IBM continued. OS/2, setup to run on
many IBM or other compatible microcomputer, was released in 1987. OS/2 is different
than window, in a sense , it does not require DOS to run underneath it. It has a
graphical-user interface, called the Workplace Shell (WPS). Since OS/2 is a multitask
operating system, it can run DOS, Windows, and OS/2 applications program simultaneously.
This give users advantage by allowing them keep their old applications while
taking advantage of new features. OS/2 was the first microcomputer operating system that
had the ability to take full advantage of the power of the newest Intel microprocessors.
It can be useful for writing programs, like C, C++, COBOL, FORTRAN, and more. You can also
take advantage of it multimedia ability by designing images and sounds and the like.
